History of Research and Analysis Wing ( R&AW )
After Independence in 1947, only Intelligence Bureau was responsible for gathering intelligence both internally and externally, and Mr. Sanjeev Pillai was appointed as the director of intelligence bureau. Indian intelligence bureau started working actually after British rule in india.
But in Indo-China war in 1962, Indian intelligence Bureau did not performed its work upto to the limit. Thats why this was also one of the causes of india’s defeat from china. Further in Indo-Pak war in 1965, Intelligence Bureau faced resistance in gathering intelligence externally. So from that time onwards, Pandit Nehru decided to form a new agency which may work or deal with only External affairs.
So then, under the leadership of Indira Gandhi, Indian Research and Analysis Wing was formed in 1968. After that R&AW came into work courageously. And the legendary Spy Master R.N Kao was appointed as the Director of Research and Analysis Wing.
Veteran R&AW Agent Ravinder Kaushik ( The Black Tiger ) Who became Major in Pakistan Army
Ravinder Koushik also known as ” The Black Tiger ” . This name was given to him by former India’s Prime Minister Indira Gandhi due to his brave sacrifice for his nation by joining Research and Analysis Wing. He hailed from Rajasthan state, Shriganga Nagar District.

During that show, some R&AW Officers were sitting over there and continuously watching him. They founded alot of spy’s qualities in Koushik’s role, that are necessary to become a spy.
Then R&AW Officers selected him as an R&AW agent and Koushik accepted their proposal happily. Ravinder koushik then gone for the training in Delhi. In the training, he was conferred with complete Islam and about Pakistan’s government. When his training was completed for 2 years then he was sent to Pakistan as a resident agant to acquire Pakistani Army’s strategies against India.
His real named was converted into different name i.e Ravinder koushik>>>>>Nabi Ahmed Shakir. In Pakistan, he settled up in Lahore and took admission in Lahore University for LLB. After that, he prepared himself more and promoted to Major rank in Pak Army.
He got married with a girl named as ” Amanat ” daughter of a Pak Army Officer. But Pakistani Army did not know that, a R&AW agent has been working as an Officer in Pakistan army for a long time. Ravinder koushik used to provide important and useful information to India, and also tell the strategies of Pakistan Army ( Power i.e strong and weak points ). But in 1983, Ravinder koushik was arrested due to another R&AW agent ( Inayat Masiah ), he told everything about Ravinder koushik to the Pakistan Army. After listening this big blackhole, Pakistan army was totally shocked that an Indian agent was working in Pakistani Army since long time.
